Subtropics

The subtropical zones, or subtropics, are geographical and climate zones immediately north and south of the tropics. Geographically part of the temperate zones of both hemispheres, they cover middle latitudes from approximately 23°26′09.0″ to 35° to 40° north and south. Subtropical climates are often characterized by hot summers and mild winters with infrequent frost, and most fall into two basic types: humid subtropical and dry summer or Mediterranean climate. A great portion of the world's deserts lie within the subtropics due to the semi-permanent subtropical anticyclone.

The Trewartha classification requires at least eight months with mean temperature above 10°C and at least one month below 18°C. The Troll-Paffen system defines warm temperate zones based on coldest-month averages between 2°C and 13°C in the Northern Hemisphere and 6°C to 13°C in the Southern Hemisphere. Holdridge uses mean annual biotemperature between the frost line (16°C–18°C) and 24°C, noting that most plants on the warmer side are sensitive to frost. Rainfall patterns in the subtropics are driven by the Hadley cell circulation, where air rises near the equator, moves poleward, and subsides near the 30th parallel, forming the subtropical ridge. This leads to arid conditions on the southwest sides of continents and humid conditions on the southeast sides. The humid subtropical climate typically has summer as the wettest season, while Mediterranean climates have winter as the wet season. Flora in the subtropics includes palms, citrus, mango, lychee, avocado, tree ferns, dracaena, yucca, and trees in the Taxaceae. Apple, pear, and pomegranate also grow well. Pest control is easier than in the tropics due to cooler winters.
